Research

The objective of the research is to identify cases suitable for victim offender dialogue. Around 40 women and 50 juveniles were interviewed in detail. Initially a questionnaire was used to collect the data however it was later felt that in-depth information and back ground of crime is vital to select cases suitable for victim offender dialogue. Hence, after discarding the questionnaire, interviews were conducted in an informal manner with the assurance to the inmates of complete confidentiality of information.

This approach helped and inmates shared key information which they hadn´t shared with others. This helped understand their situation better and suitability of their case for victim offender dialogue. These interviews had a therapeutic effect on the inmates and they reported a feeling of lifting of burden. They also shared some difficulties they faced in the prison which helped understand the needs for some legislative reforms as well.

Based on these interviews and findings, the Child Rehabilitation Program was initiated within two weeks into research. Psychotherapy clinics were also initiated a couple of months later.

It was also discovered that a clear need and space for victim offender dialogue exists. Currently the victim offender dialogue centre is established in City Court premises in Karachi.
